Sergio M. Rapu was born on Rapa Nui (Easter Island, Chile) and grew up speaking English and Spanish while learning the traditions of his Polynesian culture.  After recieving a degree in Television Production from Loyola Marymount University he established Mara Films LLC, a multimedia production company serving the film, television, and web/mobile media industries.

 

Sergio has worked on numerous projects ranging from narrative and experimental films, to documentaries, commercials, and corporate projects. In 2005, he wrote and directed Ka Haka Rongo a PBS interstitial about Polynesian identity.  In 2008 he wrote his first narrative feature, Kava Kava, which tell a contemporary story of Rapa Nui's struggle in adapting to globalization while conserving ancient traditions.

 

Through his work, Sergio aims to provide a voice for the Rapanui and other indigenous peoples. In doing so, he hopes these stories will educate and inspire his audience to think beyond their own lives and experience the world through the eyes of indigenous cultures.
